Luka Amaru was born in the Bay Area but grew up in his home country, Peru. He later graduated from an arts-oriented high school in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has become a self taught professional by beginning freelance commission work in 2016. Luka is a queer trans man and enjoys blurring the lines between illustration and fine art - his work features diverse nude bodies, fantastical elements, and bright eye catching color schemes.

This piece is an idea that began simmering in the back of my mind a while back. I’d been wanting to do a surreal underwater piece for a while, and after more than 10 different thumbnails and drafts I settled on a composition and color scheme. I took inspiration from Mayan art for the primary figure’s facial features, and imagined a scene where a glowing fishing lure drew in a school of fish surrounding a feminine elemental entity. Much of my recent work is surreal and can be interpreted in a variety of ways; I like making observers linger and ask themselves questions about what they see in my work, I invite folks to give it meaning as if interpreting a dream.
