Emily Brock Lewis - "Night Heron by Day"
10 × 10 acrylic and oil paint on wood art panel
I am a multimedia artist living and working in Berkeley. Highlighting overlooked corners, my current work explores the flora and fauna of our urban landscape and how nature finds a way to thrive in unexpected ways. The black-crowned night heron, the official bird of Oakland, is an iconic example of this adaptability. My piece for this exhibit “Night Heron by Day” is based on a photo I took of a night heron resting on an awning in downtown Oakland. It was created using acrylic paint for the line work and oil glazing for the color. If you are interested in learning more about these magnificent birds please check out the Oakland Zoo’s Heron Rescue Project.
