"Protege Me" is what I am calling this piece, I think my heart and mind has been on the mass deportations and the fear people have that their family member might be taken from them. Thinking about the women who might lose their child, or husband, and be left alone without someone to protect or to protect them. In our society, no matter what race, women are always in need of protection. This woman hiding in the cactus, using the thorns as protection, just wants to live her life without fear, she will risk anything for that freedom, even the pricks of the thorns from her chosen hiding place. The hummingbird represents hope, because there is always hope in seemingly hopeless times. Hummingbirds in Mexican culture, are symbols of strength during difficult times and said to be messengers from the afterlife. "Protege me" protect me- a little prayer for strength and protection during these challenging times for women and for all.
