Artist Statement - Ryan McJunkin

My art explores the relationship between people and the environment, the way nature transforms over time, and the deep connections that tie everything in the world together. I often work with butterflies as a central subject. They allow me to create colorful, shimmering surfaces that mimic the reflective quality of real butterfly wings. Each butterfly in my work begins as a hand-drawn creation, usually screen printed and then cut out using paper and/or teflective metallic looking materials to bring them to life.

I am fascinated by the intricate patterns found in nature and aim to capture their beauty and complexity in my work. By layering textures, colors, and shapes, I create pieces that can be appreciated on two levels: for their immediate visual impact and for the deeper meanings they reveal upon closer inspection. Whether it's the species of butterfly I depict or the branching patterns inspired by rivers, trees, and canyons, my art is rich with symbolism. These patterns, shaped by forces like gravity and water, tell a story about the interconnectedness of life and the powerful systems that govern our world.

Through my work, I hope to spark curiosity and reflection. I want viewers to feel joy and wonder when they first encounter my art, but also to leave with a sense of deeper awareness about the beauty and fragility of our planet. My dream is to create installations that extend beyond gallery walls, appearing in unexpected outdoor spaces where people might pause, interact, and think. By combining playfulness with thought-provoking themes, I aim to inspire a connection to the natural world and a sense of responsibility for its preservation.
